Film London Invests Over £300,000 In Artists’ Films
Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN) have announced they are investing over £170,000 in five new moving image projects from London-based artists. The projects, now greenlit for production, are the first to be commissioned through FLAMIN Productions, a unique production fund which provides artists with the opportunity to produce ambitious and original moving image works.
Supported by Arts Council England, FLAMIN Productions is the only scheme of its kind in the UK. Allocating substantial funds, specifically for artist film-makers, it offers awardees the freedom to experiment with the moving image. The scheme represents a unique combination of access to both art and film industries, through Film London’s extensive experience of commissioning for the visual arts world, and its outstanding film and media industries knowledge base.
The artists benefiting from the first round of this innovative scheme are Phil Coy, Charlotte Ginsborg, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Elizabeth Price and Ben Rivers. Each production will receive between £30,000 and £35,000, ranging in style from computer animation to observational documentary. Subjects explored are as diverse as Bertolt Brecht, the residents of a south London street and a ship wreck.
Maggie Ellis, Head of Production and Talent Development at Film London commented: "FLAMIN Productions provides significant amounts of funding, plus guidance and support which allows artists to advance their practice. Singularly ambitious in their vision, the five selected projects share a common spirit of experimentation. They are embracing new technologies, techniques and working processes and questioning boundaries, formats and conventions. We feel privileged to be supporting and working with such creative individuals and are confident that these new works will push the boundaries of the art form and excite both national and international audiences."
FLAMIN Productions have also launched a call for applications, with an additional £130,000 available to fund up to five more projects. It will fund large scale, single-screen work which represents a major new step in an artist’s practice. With an open application process, it attracts the capital’s most innovative moving image artists, with projects that push the boundaries of the artform. To apply online visit: www.filmlondon.org.uk/flaminproductions
The deadline is Thursday 1st July 2010.
