Film London Invests £135k In New Projects

News Image
Film London is investing £135,000 of production funding through its Artists' Moving Image Network (FLAMIN) in four new projects from London-based artists.
Mark Leckey, Simon Martin, Gail Pickering and Grace Schwindt have been commissioned through FLAMIN Productions to produce "ambitious and original" moving image works.
Supported by Arts Council England, FLAMIN Productions funds large scale, single screen works.
The group provides development and production funding as well as bespoke training, advice and professional mentoring.
FLAMIN Productions' four major new commissions represent a new development and challenge for the selected artists.
2008 Turner prize winner Mark Leckey, whose work has recently been exhibited at this year’s Venice Biennale, has been greenlit for On Pleasures Bent; Simon Martin, whose recent work features in solo shows in London, New York, Toronto and Amsterdam will make UR Feeling; Gail Pickering, who has exhibited her recent moving image work in Bristol, London, Grenoble, Stuttgart and Paris, will make Dirty Pictures Mirror Speech; and Grace Schwindt, whose recent work featured in solo shows in New York, Edinburgh, Derry, Wiels, Brussels, London and Glasgow, will make Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: "Central to Film London's strategy is to ensure we continue to discover and nurture London's film-making talent. Through FLAMIN, with crucial funding from Arts Council England, we support artist film-makers to develop and produce interesting works which also progresses them in their careers. I'm delighted FLAMIN Productions continues to build a strong reputation of commissioning projects that impress both the film and art worlds as well as find audiences and look forward to seeing these four new pieces."
Peter Heslip, Director Visual Arts, Arts Council England said: "Supporting artists at key stages of their careers lies at the heart of what the Arts Council does and these new commissions will give artists working in moving image the opportunity to create work that matches their artistic ambitions. We are proud to support FLAMIN Productions through the inclusion of Film London in our National Portfolio and we look forward to seeing this work come to fruition over the next few years. The scheme has an impressive list of alumni whose commissioned works have been screened internationally and received prestigious awards; we look forward to seeing this year’s artists emulate their success."
Maggie Ellis, Head of Artists' Moving Image at Film London added: "FLAMIN Productions represents a unique opportunity, offering substantial financial investment alongside a generous raft of practical support from development through to exhibition. The four selected projects continue the rich tradition of experimental cinema in the UK, challenging established codes, pushing the boundaries of the medium and working without compromise. This diverse slate of work looks set to repeat the fantastic success of FLAMIN Productions and I look forward to seeing the artists and their projects realise their tremendous potential. 'Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.' (Frank Zappa)."
The fifth round of FLAMIN Productions funding will open for applications at the end of 2013. Further announcements will be made over the coming months.
