Sony Announces Boost In European HDCAM SR Tape Sales

Sony Professional has announced significant momentum in sales of its HDCAM SR tapes in Europe.
Since 2003, more than 250,000 tapes have been sold in Europe, which the company says proves how pervasive HDCAM SR tape has become amongst high-end post production houses.
In the six years, following its launch, HDCAM SR has become the de facto standard for transfer of high-end, high-definition (HD) programmes, advertisements and feature films.
The extension of the HDCAM SR camera range, not least the introduction of the SRW-9000 in April 2009, proves Sony Professional's commitment to the HDCAM SR format. Bérangére Lanza, European Marketing Manager, Sony Professional Media, said: "The advent of file-based formats has revolutionised high-end post production, but the fact we've seen tape sales in Europe march from strength to strength proves the significant role tape still plays. We believe broadcasters, producers and film-makers alike want the flexibility of a solution that can incorporate both tape and file-based acquisition and workflow. Sony Professional is excellently positioned to cater to this demand and provide what customers need."
Sony Professional has built HDCAM SR tape capabilities into every aspect of its HDCAM SR workflow, from acquisition - the SRW-9000 being the first HDCAM SR tape one piece camcorder - through to archiving.
The forthcoming upgrades to the SRW-5800 VTR will further extend possibilities for customers to use a combination of tape and file-based processes at each stage of their workflow.
Introducing file-based HDCAM SR workflow in early 2010 will strengthen the use of tape as both workflows will coexist, providing customers who wish to benefit from the extensive options HDCAM SR as a format offers, the option of using tape or memory, or a combination of both.
Bérangére Lanza, European Marketing Manager, Sony Professional Media, continued: "For high end drama productions, where a slick, efficient workflow is imperative to cap production timeframes and costs, we believe tape will remain the primary choice for our customers, for back up and content archiving. Likewise, for documentaries and natural history programming, the security tape offers is likely to mean it remains the most desirable medium."
