Welsh Student Celebrates
Aimee Hibbard (pictured) has found success when her 'Out of Reach' animation scooped the Award for Best Technical Achievement at the International Film School Wales Finest Films Showcase.
The Welsh student, whose film was a hit at the Graduation Show at Newport School of Art Media and Design, has also created the cover for a new children's book.
Aimee - who has just completed three years studying Animation at the University of Wales, Newport - designed the colourful cover for 'A Dangerous Game of Football', a book about a magical camel written by Barbara Spencer.
"This commission came about purely by accident when I was working as a volunteer at an animal sanctuary," said 22-year-old Aimee, a former pupil of Duffryn High School in Newport.
"The author asked me where I'd got my T-shirt which featured a cartoon animal. When I told her I'd designed it myself she asked me to do the cover for the book. Barbara is so pleased with the result she’s asked me to design the cover and do the illustrations for her next book."
Aimee's animation film 'Out of Reach', was one of the highlights of the recent Graduation Show at Newport School of Art Media and Design, and scooped the award for Best Technical Achievement at the International Film School Wales Finest Films Showcase.
"My film is about an inventor who is building a robot when he drops a vital part which he can't reach so has to make remote controlled device to recover it.
"Unfortunately, he ends up wrecking his robot in the process of recovering the missing part," added Aimee who is now off to the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival where another film she worked on is being screened.
Programme Leader on the Animation Degree course, James Manning, said, "Aimee is typical of the animators we are producing who are making critically acclaimed work.
"At Newport we're promoting film-making that tells stories and makes statements. As a result, our students are making films that people respond to," he said.
