BBC Engineers Win 'IET Innovation in Engineering Award' At Awards

The world class engineers at Kingswood Warren triumphed on Tuesday 13 November at the Institute of Engineering and Technology awards held at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London.
The BBC team - made up of Senior Engineer Peter Moss, Lead Engineer Justin Mitchell and Research Engineers Martin Thorp and John Boyer - have spent three years developing MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) broadcast technology. MIMO has the potential to greatly help with the problem of spectrum capacity constraints on DTT and could therefore facilitate HD delivery on Freeview. The team working in conjunction with counterparts from National Grid Wireless, Arqiva and OFCOM, beat off stiff competition from ‘Resonates’ (on behalf of Sondrel) and the 'Tube Lines Escalator Smart Step Project' to gain the coveted IET Innovation in Engineering Award in the Project Team category.
Peter Moss, leader of the project, said: "We are thrilled that BBC R&I have been recognised by our peers at IET."
Ashley Highfield, Director of FM&T, said: "This award is proof that BBC R&I is at the centre of innovation and can only go from strength to strength. MIMO is an example of highly innovative and creative thinking to help try and solve a difficult and important problem for the BBC - how do we squeeze much more capacity out of Freeview, and get our HD channels on to it."
