Taiwan TV Trials To Utilise Atlas Mobile Transmitter From Harris
Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, announced that its Atlas mobile transmitter, featuring the Apex FLO exciter, is being used in QUALCOMM Incorporated's MediaFLO mobile TV trials in Taiwan.
The trials, being conducted by China Network Systems (CNS) and Taiwan Television Enterprise Ltd., (TTV), began this past spring and are expected to continue through the summer.
QUALCOMM developed the MediaFLO system to deliver rich, high-quality multimedia content to mobile handsets. FLO, an air interface technology and key component of the MediaFLO system, is a globally-recognized technology standard that has been opened to numerous third parties through the work of the FLO Forum. Harris has worked closely with the MediaFLO technologies development team at QUALCOMM to develop a version of its Apex digital television exciter for FLO air-interface requirements.
The trials, featuring two live channels provided by TTV and four from CNS, TTV and CNS, are designed to study and evaluate the performance of MediaFLO technology and to explore opportunities to deliver multimedia services to mobile devices in Taiwan. Harris Atlas transmitters with Apex exciters are being used to modulate and transmit the content over the air to MediaFLO-enabled mobile devices in the Taipei region.
"QUALCOMM is pleased to work with Harris transmission equipment for the Taiwan MediaFLO trial," said Mike Coad, vice president of partner relations for QUALCOMM MediaFLO Technologies. "Harris Corporation's experience in broadcast-quality, live TV transmission — including multiple international mobile TV trials — makes the company an excellent choice to support our Taiwan trial."
Harris offers a complete range of television transmitters — liquid and air cooled — capable of transmitting MediaFLO services at power levels ranging from 100 W to 10 kW using the Harris Apex FLO exciter. The Apex FLO exciter is the newest version of the Apex digital exciter. First developed for ATSC transmission requirements in 2002, the Apex™ ATSC exciter has become the leading digital television exciter in countries rolling out ATSC services.
"Harris has taken a market-driven approach to mobile TV, and strongly favors supporting multiple mobile broadcast technologies to help drive revenue opportunities for our allies, and a wide selection of service offerings for end users. As an active member of the FLO Forum, we are very pleased to announce the use of our Atlas mobile transmission products in the MediaFLO trials in Taiwan," added Tim Thorsteinson, president, Harris Broadcast Communications.
