BBC given ultimatum over News 24

The BBC have been ordered by the government to find a "clearer sense of direction" for their 24-hour news channel, claiming the station needs to be more "distinctive" to justify use of licence fee payers money.
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell wants fresh assurances that the channel does not duplicate what is already supplied by Sky News and has told the corporation to come up with a new definition of what it thinks it should provide viewers.
Her concerns follow the publication of former Financial Times editor Richard Lambert's report on the rolling news channel, which has cost at least £220m since it was launched.
"I've said before that the BBC should provide us with public service channels that are distinctive from commercial channels. I see no reason why News 24 should be any different," Ms Jowell said.
"Richard Lambert's report has persuaded me that the BBC governors need to deliver a clearer remit for News 24, one that will produce a high quality service rolling news channel while at the same time develop a distinct identity for the channel, setting it apart from other 24-hour news services."
