REPORT SHOWS SCREEN VIOLENCE IS A TURN OFF
THE BROADCASTING Standards Commission have issued a report that states violence on television concerns many viewers.
Some 45 per cent of women, compared with 31 per cent of men, expressed concern about violence on television, and 30 per cent of women compared with 17 per cent of men referred to swearing and offensive language.
Previous research has shown that the recognition of ‘too much’ sex or violence and offensive language does not, for a substantial minority, necessarily translate into offence.
Within a study looking at the depiction of sex, it was noted that while many respondents felt there was now more sex on television, and were cynical about the reasons for this increase, they were progressively more likely to accept or, at least, tolerate it.
The groups most likely to hold negative attitudes to television content have encountered material, which led them to stop watching programmes, were females, older viewers and religious believers. However these are the groups that are less likely to report at least one incident in their two-week period of viewing.
The indication is that they are avoiding material that would cause them offence.
