VOIGT FEELS SAFE WITH NAGRA DIGITAL RECORDERS
FREELANCE Sound Mixer Ian Voigt recently used Nagra-D and SRES-C Portable Digital Recorders, hired from Richmond Film Services, on the set of ‘SW9’, a new British street culture film from the makers of the highly acclaimed ‘Human Traffic’.
Voigt (pictured left) said: “In SW9 a lot of action happens in the street. We can have three or four characters being recorded at a time using radio microphones with separate voices on each track of the NAGRA-D. This is a fairly low budget film so I wanted to get 100 per cent usable sound, hence my decision to use NAGRA-d as the main recorder.”
Voigt has been involved in the sound arena for many years, working on successful films such as, ‘Kiss before Dying’, ‘Loch Ness’ and the ‘Rachel Papers’. Top television dramas include ‘McCallum’ and ‘Kavanagh QC’.
At present he is working on a major new film for 20th Century Fox ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ which is being shot on location in Slovakia and starring Hollywood legend Gene Hackman.
Voigt said: “The best recommendation I can give to the NAGRA-D is to say that I only use one of them. I know some people who run two DATs at once for safety, but I feel confident enough with one NAGRA-D. We’re also using a NAGRA ARES-C for playback, which is very easy and reliable. The beauty of the flashcard system is the instant access you have to make edits, mark in and out points; it takes seconds and its great not having to spool back and wait. Obviously schedules are very tight with any film and the ARES-C is an exceptionally easy machine to use. I’ve always used it for playback, and of course it can be used either battery operated or mains.”
