A new generation of British filmmakers showcased in 'exposures' this December
Having run as a North West-only festival for the past 11 years, Cornerhouse’s 'exposures' launches on Mon 5 December as a four-day national extravaganza - packed with premieres, masterclasses, workshops and, of course, the best films currently being made by a whole new generation of filmmakers.
Each year exposures invites key players in British film and TV. This year's guests will include actress-turned-director Emily Woof, screenwriter Tim Firth, experimental music video director Adam Smith, video directors The Soup Collective and many others.
The festival sees the return of underexposed - a whole day's worth of events dedicated to very young filmmakers (18s and under) – which will culminate in the international premiere of ‘Upstaged’, a feature film made by students from South Cheshire College and starring comedian Phil Cool, Red Dwarf star Norman Lovett and Alexei Sayle. This year’s event also launches overexposed - a new showcase of independent North West filmmaking (open to non-students) which will be held every two months at Cornerhouse and provide access to the big screen for emerging filmmakers.
Films are shown in five competitive categories - Drama, Documentary, Animation, Experimental and Music Video - and each will be introduced by leading practitioners. The festival will culminate in the all-important award ceremony and the ‘Corona Extra Best of the Fest Party’, where over £3500 worth of Sony filmmaking equipment will be handed out – thanks to the support of Corona Extra, Sony, and the BBC – who are sponsoring the Documentary Award. Winning filmmakers will also secure distribution deals with Britshorts.
exposures is also committed to promoting the best student work long after the festival is over. Many films from last year's festival went on to be shown at festivals in Toronto, Prague and Portugal, as well as on a Northwest tour. Some have also been or will be shown on Blue Peter, BBC2, The Community Channel, and Channel M.
