Pioneer Pictures launches in London

bfi Black World and Film London have joined forces to create Pioneer Pictures, a series of free London-wide screenings of classic black British films for Black History Season.
Shot in the capital, the three films ‘Pressure’ (1975), ‘Burning An Illusion’ (1981) and ‘Black Joy’ (1975) all reflect the experiences of London’s first African-Caribbean generation.
Screening throughout October and November, the initiative will also offer local audiences the opportunity to meet directors and cast and to discover short films from new black directors.
The final screening at City Hall on the November 23 will be followed by a panel discussion with the directors and cast of the three films.
Pioneer Pictures is part of Film London’s Local Digital Network which takes film to new venues and audiences by providing fully portable cinema kit to local community groups. The high-tech equipment is available on a hire basis for a nominal fee and Pioneer Pictures is the first in a series of programmed packages available through the Network.
bfi Blackworld is a national initiative to highlight black creative talent in film and television. The initiative incorporates film touring seasons, National Film Theatre film and TV seasons, film and DVD releases and publishing and education projects. Pioneer Pictures forms part of bfi Black World’s central remit to develop and support new audiences. The tour will extend to other venues around the country.
