SKILLSET TO WORK CLOSELY WITH OFCOM
SKILLSET could be working closely with the Office of Communications (Ofcom), the proposed new regulator for the communications sector.
The White Paper states that Ofcom will have a general responsibility to promote support for training across the broadcasting industry underpinned by licence requirements, that will include the powers to research and monitor performance.
It is expected that this will require the new body to work closely with Skillset as the industry’s National Training Organisation.
Bob Nelson, Chair of Skillset and Controller of Training and Development at the BBC, said: “The aspiration contained in the White Paper to make the UK home to the most dynamic and competitive communications and media market in the world is unachievable unless all of us who work in the industry have the skills and knowledge required to achieve it. A new converged market needs even more investment in skill, and even more capability to deliver diverse services of the highest quality. I look forward to Skillset fulfilling their strategic role in the achievement of this aspiration.”
The White Paper highlighted the fact that vocational provision must be strengthened to ensure that people have the requisite academic, technical, business and creative skills. Ofcom are to work closely with Skillset to ensure the recommendations of the Audio Visual Industries Training Group (AVITG) are implemented.
