S4C STRESS CHANNEL’S COMMITMENT TO VIEWERS

S4C’s Chief Executive Huw Jones recently underscored the Channel's educational commitment at the launch the National Assembly's initiative ‘Cymru Arlein/On line for a Better Wales’.
Welcoming delegates to S4C's Headquarters in Cardiff, he stressed the channel's commitment to enriching viewers' lives through the developing use of Information and Communications Technology.
Jones said: "Becoming familiar with mastering and taking advantage of new technology in all its forms, but particularly the technology which handles information and creativity, is vitally important if Wales are to play a full part in the world of the 21st Century, both economically, culturally and in terms of their citizens' life skills and abilities. S4C have accepted the challenge to be at the centre of these developments.
"Some time next year, it looks as though 50 per cent of homes in Wales will have digital receiving equipment.
"That is the vision which underlies the concept of the Wales Digital College, which in turn is an important part of S4C's vision of the digital future. There is no reason why an educational service, provided in partnership by Welsh educational and other institutions acting together cannot be broadcast throughout the whole of the UK and why it cannot be a UK and even European leader in its field.
"Lifelong learning based on digital technology could be a profitable Welsh export as well as having value in itself for the people of Wales." (CD)
