Kingswood Warren Ventures launches ‘revolutionary’ camera
Kingswood Warren Ventures, a subsidiary of the BBC Ventures Group, has recently launched its new cable-free digital radio camera system.
The camera, which is now commercially available to other broadcasters for the first time, is the first cable–free camera of its kind to use DVCPRO encoding and COFDM, and has revolutionised BBC outside broadcast coverage.
The company explained that the high bit rate/low delay combination used in DVCPRO puts the camera ahead of the competition in terms of picture quality, enabling it to be used alongside traditional cabled cameras in multi-camera productions.
The camera has been most recently used at the Commonwealth Games, and gave the BBC shots which previously would have been impossible, and in part contributed to the industry plaudits received.
Thanks to the advantages of cable free operation, which include increased freedom of movement, flexibility and improved safety - camera operators were, for the first time, able to follow swimmers from showers to poolside in one continuous shot. This is made possible due to diversity reception, which ensures more reliable and stable pictures.
Mark Popkiewicz, Managing Director of Kingswood Warren Ventures Ltd, a division of BBC Ventures Group, says: “The new digital radio camera is set to transform the way programmes are made – and its proven success in the Commonwealth Games, Jubilee, and the UK Golf Open has already shown to what extent. Cable-free operation means greater flexibility, which in turn, makes for visually superior, more exciting pictures.”
