NEW CHAIRMAN APPOINTED AT BSC

CULTURE Secretary, Chris Smith, has announced that the new Chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) is to be Lord Dubs, a former Deputy Chairman of the Independent Television Commission (ITC).
Smith said: “Lord Dubs’ strong leadership qualities, experience of the broadcast media, and sensitivity to the views of the public will enable him to make an important contribution to the work of the BSC. In taking up the post of Chairman of the BSC Lord Dubs has had to resign as Deputy Chairman of the ITC under the 1996 Broadcasting Act. In his new role he will, however, work closely with the ITC, the Radio Authority and the other regulators in this field. His widespread policy making experience will be of particular value of the BSC contributes to the debate about the future regulation of broadcasting and telecommunications.”
Lord Dubs of Battersea, was a member of the BSC between 1988 and 1994, became Deputy Chairman in 1995, and served as Deputy Chairman of the BSC until 1997.
The remuneration for the Chairman is £49,502 per annum for a nominal three days per week.
The appointment, which began on February 1, is for three years. (CD)
