BBC triumphs at Banff World Television Festival
The BBC has triumphed at the prestigious Banff 2005 Rockie Awards, winning seven awards including the Global Television Grand Prize for BBC ONE's 'Blackpool'.
The awards, judged by a distinguished international jury, form an integral part of the Banff World Television Festival.
BBC ONE's Blackpool, written by acclaimed writer Peter Bowker, was named best of festival, winning both the Global Television Grand Prize and Best Mini-Series.
Blending drama, musical and thriller, the series starred David Morrissey and new Doctor Who David Tennant.
Factual BBC award winners included Best History and Biography Programmes for BBC FOUR's 'Storyville: House of Saud' and Best Information and Current Affairs for BBC ONE's 'Panorama: The New Killing Fields'.
The BBC's entertainment and lifestyle programming was also successful, with BBC THREE's 'Flashmob – the Opera' winning Best Performance Programme; Best Lifestyle Programme for BBC ONE's 'What Not to Wear: Teenage Daughters' and Best Unscripted Entertainment Programme for BBC TWO's 'Dragon's Den'.
The BBC's Director of Television, Jana Bennett, says: "We are very proud that the BBC has been recognised for creative excellence at this prestigious festival, against such strong competition.
"I'm particularly pleased at the range of winning programmes across all four channels from a bold opera experiment on BBC THREE to BBC ONE's original drama Blackpool, which shows that backing creativity works."
