ARTEM U-BOAT GUNS ARE A BIT OF AN ENIGMA

News Image
SPECIAL effects house Artem have completed a commission to make two replica U-boat guns for the new £30 million wartime thriller, Enigma.
The film is based on Robert Harris' bestseller about the code breakers at Station X, Bletchley Park during the Second World War.
The 30mm anti-aircraft ‘flack’ gun and 88mm ‘deck’ gun are lightweight full scale authentic looking replicas from a WW2 type 7c German U-boat. The submarine, complete with guns, is now on show at the Enigma Museum, which is also based at Bletchley Park.
Filming was completed late last year and stars Dougray Scott, Kate Winslet, Jeremy Northam and Saffron Burrows. Set in 1943 the cryptanalysts at Britain’s code-breaking centre are facing their worst nightmare: Nazi U-boats have unexpectedly changed their Enigma cipher and a merchant shipping convoy with 10,000 people on board is in peril. The film was directed by Michael Apted and produced by Lorne Michaels and Mick Jagger.
Perivale based Artem have recently worked on films such as Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ and have commercials for Coca-Cola, Weetabix and Pirelli. (GB)
