Alias celebrates UK animation talent at Watershed’s SE3D Showcase

Alias has released details of the animators taking part in Watershed’s SE3D, the unique technology initiative, announced in September 2004, designed to encourage UK 3D animation talent to push the boundaries of contemporary animation through the use of cutting-edge technology.
Animators from Caernavon to Cardiff, and from London to Manchester, have been using Alias’ Maya® 3D animation software, and the power of HP Labs utility rendering service, to create a broad range of animated short films. Their work, which includes conceptual art, comic capers and moving drama, is being showcased at SE3D in Bristol, part of the Animated Encounters festival, on April 21.
“It’s been a pleasure and a fascinating experience to partner with HP Labs for SE3D and to work closely with a diverse group of animators,” said Andy Payne, entertainment business manager for Alias in the UK. “SE3D has given some of the UK’s most talented animators the opportunity bring their ideas to life through cutting-edge creative technologies and services. Their enthusiasm and dedication to the animated art form is astonishing, and the on-screen results demonstrate what a vibrant and imaginative animation community there is here.”
The co-funded SE3D showcase represents a significant investment by Alias and HP Labs in the 3D animation market, and combines the latest technologies and experimental services from both companies. SE3D is investigating how multi-user utility computing services are set to improve the technology and economics of media production, whilst uncovering new talent for the animation industry at large.
