GENEX SCORES BIG AT OSCARS

News Image
GENEX hi-resolution digital audio recorders have been used during the production of many of this year’s Oscar nominated movies.
Supplied by LA digital audio equipment rental company DMT Rentals, Genex GX8000/8500s were chosen for recording and mixing of scores for films such as ‘Erin Brockovitch’ and ‘Cast Away’. The submarine adventure movie ‘U-571’ scooped an Academy Award for Sound Editing.
As DMT President Doug Botnick explains, sonic performance and the MO medium are key to making Genex the recorder of choice in the Hollywood film scoring community. “First and foremost, it’s about sound quality. The Genex can record 8 channels of 24-bit/96kHz and, if required, can also record the 4-track mix at 192kHz, and also 8 channels of DSD. And MO is the perfect medium for this kind of work. It’s removable, durable and extremely stable - you effectively create a playable archive when you record on MO.”
In London, engineer Chris Dibble (pictured) used a Genex to record the mix of Rachel Portman’s Academy Award nominated score for the Miramax production ‘Chocolat’. Chris, who also used a Genex recorder on Stephen Warbeck’s 1998 Oscar winning score ‘Shakespeare in Love’, again sites 24-bit performance and the unique qualities of the MO medium as the principal reasons for choosing Genex. “The Genex is ideal for recording orchestral scores. It gives you a multichannel master of the highest possible quality on a convenient, removable medium with exceptional archival properties.”
