VTR AND THE BBC AWARDED BAFTA
THE BBC and VTR special effects team have received the award for Best Visual Effects and Graphic Design at the BAFTA Television Craft Awards.
The award was presented for the team’s work on the BBC’s epic adaptation of Mervyn Peake’s fantasy novel Gormenghast, which triumphed over competition from Channel 4’s ‘Longitude’ (Framestore) and ‘Private Lives of the Pharaohs’ (Red Vision), as well as BBC 2’s own ‘Horizon: Supermassive Black Holes’.
The Film Factory was chosen by the BBC to supervise the Post-Production at VTR, which completed 270 highly stylised digital effects shots for the critically acclaimed series. Tasks included 2D compositing using Henry and Inferno, 3D creature animation at VTR’s sister company The Hive, title design, digital matte creation and invisible effects and retouching.
Compositing was performed at VTR by Alan Maiden and Richard Greenwood.
Chris Petts at The Hive, created a number of animated elements including a flock of some 30 owls which attack two of the principal characters.
The entire Gormenghast series was graded at VTR by Spirit artist Gerri McCloughlin.
Gormenghast also received the award for Best Make-Up and Hair Design.
