BBC TECHNOLOGY TAKE CONTROL AT NAB

THE BBC Technology’s systems in their NAB booth was controlled by their unique Broadcast Network Control System (BCNS).
The booth’s ‘Master Control Room’ system handled the local video and audio routers, processing amplifiers and related equipment, cameras, disk recorders, as well as demonstrating live remote control of video routers in London.
BCNS, claim the BBC, is the only control system that integrates fully the control of the entire range of broadcast hardware under a consistent user interface. It was also used to control DVD players displaying content for all BBC Technology’s specialist business divisions. Used throughout the BBC, BCNS is available commercially and has already been invested in by worldwide broadcasters including DIRECTV and BSKYB as well as London Weekend Television in the UK and RUV in Iceland.
BBC Technology, which officially launched at NAB 2001, also displayed a range of their services on offer.
Consulting and Projects (C & P) offer business, organisation and technology consultancy and provides expertise across the whole range of broadcast and new media opportunities. They also offer end-to-end solutions for complete digital broadcast environments through their Broadcast Systems Integration specialists, providing design, configuration, installation and maintenance as well as overall project management. Additionally, representatives from the Digital Media Consultancy group, who have recently joined C & P, where available to advise on revolutionary plans for exploiting convergence.
BBC Technology’s Digital Media Services span content ingest in any format through to encoding and distribution/delivery in any format, including DVD authoring, web hosting and media streaming.
BBC Technology already operates one of the world’s largest media streaming sites.
On the booth there was a live video and audio encoding demo as well as a remote encoding demo from London via the UK and New York services. (GB)
