UTV VIEWER RATINGS SOAR

UTV ratings soared on May 31 as soap fans switched on in their thousands to watch ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘The Soap Awards’ delivering the highest share of audience for Northern Ireland this year.
The Steve McDonnell ‘will he – won’t he’ wedding story line of ‘Coronation Street’ attracted a massive 75 per cent of viewers in the province – close to 350,000people. With 300,000 of those staying on to watch ‘The Soap Awards’ presented by Richard and Judy.
Alan Bremner, Director of Programmes for UTV, said: “What a fantastic performance, we know our soaps are firm favourites with Northern Ireland viewers but on May 31 UTV secured a phenomenal 60 per cent of local audience – five times that of our nearest competitors BBC1 which got 12 per cent. ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Emmerdale’ always deliver big audiences when you consider the increased competition on TV channels, this is a tremendous achievement for UTV. We’re definitely ‘soap-aholics’ because ten per cent more people here watched these programmes than anywhere else in the UK.” (CD)
