FOR THE first time at FrameStore, the CGI team have created cutting edge, photo-realistic water and cloth, tumbling inside the latest revolutionary Dyson creation – The Dyson Contrarotator.
The new commercial, written By Paul Briginshaw and David Abbott of Miles, Calcraft, Briginshaw, Duffy, explains the difference between the traditionally accepted wisdom of single drum machines and how the new double contrarotating drum system is twice as fast, replicating the most effective method of washing - by hand.
Whilst the drum, water and cloth effects had to be believable it was impossible to consider shooting any of the elements for real. Philip Hunt, Director, decided to use a mixture of 3D CGI and motion control photography to realize the images his board required and brought in FrameStore’s head of CGI commercials, Andrew Daffy, to supervise the creation of photo-realistic mechanical parts, realistic 3D water and an artificial cloth simulation for the washing load itself.
Eschewing a key frame animation approach to favour a more photo-realistic render of the water and cloth, practical 3D CGI water and cloth motion simulations were created by Antony Field using bespoke simulation software. This was painstakingly modified to take into account gravity, drum volume, the dynamics of wet-cloth, and how the yellow 'paddles' reacted with the cloth and water.
