This Scotland documentary competes for Saltire Grierson Award
‘And So Goodbye’, a half hour documentary made for Scottish Screen, Scottish TV and Grampian TV, directed by Jim Hickey and produced by Robin Mitchell, has been selected to screen at the Edinburgh International Film Festival next month, making it eligible to compete for the hotly contested Saltire Society Grierson Award for Short Documentary.
The half hour film tells the extraordinary story of producer Robin Mitchell who finds some hand made movie magazines at home from which he learns about a film his father starred in and produced in 1943.
With his father too ill to tell him the story himself, Mitchell embarks on a search that leads him to find the film and the home of its director Robert Edwards. In a revealing interview Edwards talks of his lifelong passion for film and tells about the small group of enthusiasts in Fife who were behind the film’s production.
In a moving climax to the documentary, Mitchell re-unites these elderly filmmakers at a 60th anniversary screening of their film.
Director Jim Hickey said: "It was an affecting and emotional journey with a happy ending for everyone. Robin's personal search for a piece of his father's history led us to a hitherto unknown piece of Scottish film history. And we were blessed with the wonderful Bob Edwards who would be a gift for any documentary film maker."
Steve McIntyre, Chief Executive of Scottish Screen, said: "This Scotland is a most innovative documentary series which has uncovered marvelous stories such as And So Goodbye which really add to the mostly untold history of ordinary people in Scotland.
“Scottish Screen is delighted to be involved with this scheme along with Scottish TV and Grampian TV and we wish And So Goodbye every success in the competition. "
And So Goodbye screens on Tuesday August 24 in the Cameo, Home St. Edinburgh at 3pm and on Scottish TV and Grampian TV on Tuesday August 31 at 7.30pm.
The winner of the Saltire Society Grierson Award Short Documentary will be announced at the end of the festival.
