BFI ORGANISE EXHIBIT OF JACK CARDIFF’S WORK

THE FILM career of Oscar winning cinematographer and director, Jack Cardiff, was celebrated by the British Film Institute and BAFTA at the end of July.
Cardiff attended a special evening at BAFTA which included an on-stage interview with the film academic, Ian Christie, during which Cardiff discussed clips from his work, including ‘Girl on a Motorcycle’; ‘Scott of the Antarctic’; and ‘A Matter of Life and Death’. All of the clips were selected from the British Film Institute's (bfi) archives and illustrated Cardiff’s career which spans more than 80 years in the film industry. At the end of the evening, Cardiff was presented with a BAFTA fellowship.
To accompany the event, the bfi have organised an exhibition of stills, posters and designs chosen by Cardiff from bfi Collections. Each exhibit is illuminated by a personal commentary from Cardiff providing a fascinating insight into life behind the camera.
Films from ‘The Red Shoes to Rambo’: ‘First Blood, Part II’ are represented, with a particular focus on the work of Powell and Pressburger.
The exhibition is to be held at BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly, London and will be open to the public from 3 September - 31 October 2001 by advance appointment only. Tel: (020) 7734 0022 to make a reservation. (CD)
