Tolka Chosen To Demonstrate Its TV 3.0 Processing Technologies

Tolka Telecommunications has been selected to demonstrate its TV 3.0 processing technologies in partnership with Globo, Latin America’s largest media company.

The TV 3.0 transmission standard is scheduled for introduction across Brazil in 2025. Recommended by the Brazilian Terrestrial Digital TV System Forum, with support from Brazil’s Ministry of Communications, it combines the quality of 4K-UHD on-air and 8K online with personalized and immersive sound as well as the advanced accessibility features of MPEG-H Audio.

"We are showing our latest-generation TV 3.0 Stack software and user interface on a Realtek Android platform in a presentation forming part of Globo's coverage of the Summer 2024 Paris Olympics," said Alex Day, Tolka Telecommunications’ Vice President of Business Development. "TV 3.0 is an exciting development offering television audiences across Brazil a wide range of new viewing and listening experiences. It also gives broadcasters the opportunity to implement potential revenue streams such as interactive advertising and program-related e-commerce."

"Our TV 3.0 Stack modular software includes full compatibility with Fraunhofer IIS’ MPEG-H Audio technology which is the only mandatory audio codec for TV 3.0 and will deliver personalised immersive sound to Brazil. MPEG-H Audio is already used with great success as the Korean ATSC 3.0 audio codec. Fraunhofer IIS proved a very effective technology partner during the integration of MPEG-H Audio into our solutions. These now incorporate advanced audio-related facilities such as the ability to adjust the volume of specific audio objects, enhance the dialog, select between audio descriptions and switch between program languages."

"Our software can also be used to implement digital rights management, offering content producers and broadcasters protection from disruptive program piracy. Additional TV 3.0 Stack capabilities include datacast services such as localized emergency notification, exemplified by America’s Emergency Network for which we helped create software and hardware to demonstrate its rich-media and actionable emergency alerts."

Brazil's TV 3.0 transmission standard is based on the USA-developed ATSC 3.0 formulation in which Tolka has gained great experience. Tolka activity in the ATSC 3.0 technology sector has included the development of ultra-compact plug-in receivers for direct connection to desktop computers, mobile devices or USB-equipped domestic television sets. Tolka also pioneered the development of the world’s first officially certified ATSC 3.0 set-top box receiver, powered by Tolka ATSC 3 Stack software.
