Quantel names Artist of the Year 2004

Quantel has announced that the overall winner of its prestigious Artist of the Year competition has gone to China.
The winning piece, ‘Chinese Passion for Channel 11’, was produced by The Workshop in Beijing. Created on Editbox, it relies heavily on the forms of traditional Chinese painting and opera, in both style and colour, and mixes heavily graded live footage with unique animation and a haunting Chinese soundtrack.
“This really is video design at its best," commented Quantel Chief Designer, Kathryn de Vries. "The attention to detail and dramatic use of colour throughout gives it a truly spectacular life and vibrancy and it is a worthy winner of both the Asian regional and Overall awards this year."
"We are really pleased to win the Quantel Artist of the Year Award, especially given the high standards set by the award over the years and the excellent quality of the work we were up against," said Mr Ding Bin, CEO of The Workshop. "This is the first time a Chinese artist has won the competition, but every year there is more and more excellent graphics work coming out of China, so we do not think it will be the last."
While the Chinese may have hooked the Overall Award this year, the judges were extremely impressed by the excellent graphics work that the competition attracted from artists and organisations worldwide.
