BBC appoints Head of Programme Legal Advice
The BBC has appointed Valerie Nazareth, currently a senior lawyer in the BBC's Programme Legal Advice department, as Head of Programme Legal Advice.
She will succeed Glenn Del Medico when he retires in August.
Valerie Nazareth was born in Kenya in 1963. She was educated at Island School in Hong Kong before coming to England to read law at University College London.
She qualified as a solicitor in 1987 with Goodman Derrick, where she worked in the litigation department for a further three years.
In 1990 she joined the BBC Solicitor's Department, dealing with litigation and programme clearance.
She has worked in Programme Legal Advice Department since its inception in 1991, although during this time she has spent periods on attachment in the Litigation Department and in Editorial Policy.
Announcing the appointment, Nicholas Eldred, BBC General Counsel, said: "Valerie has substantial experience in this area and also in the wider work of programme-making within the BBC.
"She is rightly highly regarded by programme-makers and journalists across the BBC and I believe she will make a substantial contribution in this new role.
"She takes over a strong and much respected department, built up since its inception by the outstanding work of Glenn Del Medico."
Valerie Nazareth said: "I am delighted to be invited to lead a department which is at the heart of programme-making in the BBC.
"The Programme Legal Advice department is one of the most talented team of media lawyers in the country and I look forward with them to assisting programme makers and journalists to make the best programmes they can."
