BBC DRAMA ‘CARE’ SCOOPS AWARD

A BBC One film drama has won one of the most prestigious television prizes in the world.
‘Care’, a controversial and compelling drama exploring child abuse in local authority homes, won the prize in the single drama category in the Prix Italia.
Written for BBC One by Kieran Prendiville, ‘Care’ told the fictional story of one man’s attempts to come to terms with the abuse he experienced as a child, and how his cries for help were deliberately ignored.
The Prix Italia is the eleventh prize for the powerful BBC One drama. ‘Care’ won the awards from BAFTA, BAFTA Cymru, the Royal Television Society, Celtic Film Festival 2001, the Cologne Conference/International Film Festival and IBC Nombre D’Or.
BBC Director General Greg Dyke said: “The Prix Italia is the highest accolade for any programme and shows BBC One at its best. Compelling and highly charges, ‘Care’ served as a stark reminder of the worst kind of abuse to the most vulnerable in society, children. It was important to make and fully deserves this prize.”
The cast was led by Steven Mackintosh, Jaye Griffiths and Maria Pride. ‘Care’ was a BBC Films/BBC Wale co-production. The executive producers were Jane Tranter, Pippa Harris and Aled Eirug, co-produced by Ruth Caleb and Louise Panton and directed by Antonia Bird. (CD)
