BBC GOVERNORS REAFFIRM INDEPENDENCE

THE BBC Governors have stressed the importance of upholding the independence of BBC coverage and decision-making in the face of actual or perceived political pressure.
This was announced in the account of the business from the Board of Governors’ Meeting on October 18 2001. They also expressed full confidence in management’s handling of the current crisis and paid tribute to the professionalism of staff, recognising they were working in difficult conditions.
In their meeting, the Governors had considered the addition to the BBC’s editorial policy guidelines to programme-makers covering the Afghanistan war. They felt that, like the main document, they should be made available to the public and that the BBC should be accountable for them.
