Quantel iQ used on award winning Spanish feature

‘El Cid, The Legend’, has been awarded a Goya (the Spanish equivalent of an Oscar) for best animated feature film during the annual awards ceremony held by Spain’s Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences.
Produced by Filmax Animation, El Cid is the first Spanish feature film to use Quantel’s iQ for the digital intermediate process.
Composited and colour corrected at 2K by Barcelona’s Filmtel using iQ with QColor, El Cid director Josep Pozo spent more than three years working on the project with an 800-strong team and 40 animation studios around the world. This sheer diversity of studios involved meant that locking down the 90 minutes of final footage for El Cid required a close eye on quality so that the numerous materials could be matched and digitally graded. This was made possible thanks to the speed and performance of the iQ and the experience and talent of the Filmtel team.
“As the director of the movie, I discovered a lot of advantages to working with the generationQ equipment set up in Filmtel,” says Pozo. “iQ did the colour correction process so quickly that we were able to focus all our energy on creativity. At the same time, we were able to do the grading process faster while holding to the quality more efficiently. And the instantaneous correction of so many small mistakes, smudges and shade differences let us save much more time than with earlier processes.”
