BBC RESOURCES INSTALL SSL AVANT CONSOLE

BBC Resources have announced that they have installed a 24-fader Solid State Logic (SSL) Avant digital film and post-production console in Dubbing 1, a refurbished studio equipped for Dolby 5.1 mixing at Pebble Mill in Birmingham.
The first major project for the console was the television series ‘Dalziel & Pascoe’, a BBC Birmingham production now airing on BBC1.
Already impressed with the quality and performance of the Avant console, Dubbing Mixer David Mason is also discovering the productivity advantages of Avant’s comprehensive dynamic automation and instant mix recall.
Mason said: “We have two dubbing editors working on ‘Dalziel & Pascoe’ at the same time. One editor prepares up to 24 inputs of dialogue and ADR for mixing down to four stereo pairs, while the other does the same with up to 24 effects tracks. Then comes a great innovation. Instead of recording those pre mixes, all the moves and levels are memorised by the desk – they are in fact ‘virtual’ pre mixes. When it comes to the final mix, any elements of the automated ‘virtual’ pre mixes can still be adjusted to achieve the very best balance and dramatic effect. Not only is it creatively flexible, the Avant also has practical advantages. Digitally memorised plugging and routing means the desk is quick to reset and the automation works with you not against you.

The Avant digital console at Pebble Mill is the first of three SSL consoles to have been ordered by the BBC in the last year.
In September, the BBC’s Hippodrome Theatre in London’s Golders Green re-opened following a £2.5 million refurbishment. An SL 9072 J Series SuperAnalogue console has been installed in the new control room which is designed to attract a wide range of both live and recorded music and entertainment productions.
The third console is the subject of an order from BBC Resources which has specified an SL 9048 J Series SuperAnalogue console for installation in a new Radio and Music OB vehicle. Due for delivery next year, the mobile’s first major assignment will be the coverage of The Queens Golden Jubilee celebrations. (CD)
