S4C SCOOP BAFTA AWARD
WELSH broadcasters S4C are celebrating after winning a top prize at this year's BAFTA Children's Film and Television Awards.
The event was held at the London Hilton and it was revealed that ‘Aunt Tiger’ had won in the Animation category.
A film commissioned as part of the world's largest ever co-production venture, S4C's Animated Tales of the World, ‘Aunt Tiger’ has already won a number of top animation awards, including the 'Best TV and Video Special' category in the biennial Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival and the Banff Rookie Award 2001 student jury for Best Animation Programme.
The fifteen-minute animation is based on a story from Taiwan. An elderly tiger that wants to become human before it dies discovers its dream will come true if it eats three children at once; however its plans are thwarted by a young girl.
Made in Cardiff, the cartoon was a co-production between Aaargh! Animation and Public Television Taiwan. It was broadcast on S4C last year and series distributors S4C International, S4C's commercial subsidiary, have recently sold the series to Sweden and Norway.
Meirion Davies, Commissioning Editor, Children, for S4C said: "We're thrilled to have won in the Animation category. This latest award reflects both the appeal and enterprise of S4C's programmes, and builds on the success of Tecwyn y Tractor which won a BAFTA award in the Pre-school category in 1999."
The awards, now in their sixth year, attracted a record number of entries, with nominations spread across the UK's top broadcasters, including BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Disney Channel, ITV and Nickelodeon. (CD)
