Creative Drive Remains The Beating Heart Of Post Production

News Image
We work in an industry where literally "time is money", and while technology and the way we work may have changed over the years, the drive for greater creativity remains constant, explains Greg Darby, Founder and MD, Yellowmoon.

In a market where competition is fierce, the ability to push the creative boundaries, whilst operating in a cost and time efficient way, is the key to success.

Technology, in general, is becoming a much more important part of how content is produced. Ever changing methods of capture and presentation continually open up new horizons for producers and directors. However, as technology advances, projects can also become more complex, generating huge amounts of material. For post companies it will be the ability, and more importantly, the know how, to shift large amounts of data around the facility without compromising on speed or creativity that will tell in the end.

But the post production industry is also being impacted by changes in content consumption as well as content creation. Audiences are now increasingly fragmented, accessing material via a host of different screens and platforms, from smartphones to games consoles.

This multiscreen approach is only going to get more complex; content will need to be produced in a way that ensures it meets a number of technical standards for cinema or television as well as a wide range of consumer devices.

Simplifying workflows with a single uniform format, such as Interoperable Master Format, would be a tremendous addition. It would make facilities far more efficient allowing us to deliver multiple versions of a single finished product for viewing on almost any platform.

HDR, 4K and of course VR undoubtedly bring their own complications to post production and as the number of camera formats, codecs and resolutions increase, the level of complexity involved will only get exponentially higher. But whatever the technological advances one thing remains certain, the drive for creative excellence and the simple no nonsense art of storytelling will always be the beating heart of any successful post production sector.
