I was gratified to read last week that another vendor was advocating the need to test things from first principles w.r.t. system infrastructure.

Indeed test and measurement is the process enshrined in specifications. It can only be described as the cornerstone; an imperative, ensuring fundamental basics of signal transmission are met without question.
