BUFVC welcome ITN Archive release
The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) have welcomed the award of a £2.28 million government grant to encode and deliver online some 3,000 hours of newsfilm content from the ITN Archive collection during 2004-2006.
There will also be a parallel release of the British Pathe newsreel collection. The ITN Archive project is entitled Newsfilm Online. It is supported with funds released under the Comprehensive Spending Review programme, which is a strategic investment to encourage major digitisation projects for key national assets in the UK. Newsfilm Online is a joint partnership between the BUFVC, the ITN Archive, and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).
Newsfilm Online will offer access to substantial quantities of television news content to users throughout UK higher and further education. During two years the project will deliver some 6,000 hours of news content (including British Pathe) from the ITN Archive, one of the world’s major newsfilm collections, and deliver this to universities and colleges in the UK via JANET. The news film will be delivered in downloadable form, meaning that users may retain and reuse copies long term under a sub-licence agreement.
All of the ITN material encoded for Newsfilm Online will be made available to UK higher and further education ‘in perpetuity’.
