NTL win three-year contract to relay WRC coverage

NTL Broadcast have been awarded a three-year contract by Channel 4 to provide transmission services for all European legs of the World Rally Championships (WRC) for the next three years.
The deal complements NTL Broadcast's existing contract with Chrysalis Television to provide satellite links for the worldwide and European World Rally Championship events, which NTL won in 2001.
Steve Holebrook, NTL Broadcast's business director for media solutions, added: "It is a mark of the reliability, strength and expertise of NTL Broadcast that we are able to use existing business to achieve additional deals, as has been the case with the World Rally Championships over the last few years.
"We are extremely pleased to be providing this service to Channel 4, it's an exciting piece of business and we enjoy doing it."
NTL Broadcast is providing two SNG trucks at each of the 10 European events, with Channel 4's hosting done directly from the site of each race.
Programme feeds will be uplinked from the SNG trucks to NTL Broadcast's leased space segment on Eutelsat W2. From here the signal is downlinked by NTL as a back up to the signal, which is taken direct from the satellite at Channel 4's Broadcasting Centre in London.
NTL Broadcast will broadcast Channel 4's live-to-air coverage of each event that includes race footage, reviews and guest interviews.
Dick Eagle, Deputy Chief Engineer of Channel 4, explained why NTL Broadcast was chosen: "NTL Broadcast has a proven track record in providing broadcast services for the Championships, having successfully done so for the past three years. We were keen to tap into this expertise for our coverage of the European events and feel that our transmission requirements are in very capable hands."
