Digital Element Puts BBC Services On The Map

News Image
IP geolocation provider Digital Element has been tasked by the BBC to supply its NetAcuity Edge solution to manage the geographic rights of its online TV and radio content.

The BBC, like any major broadcaster today, provides a range of online and offline content to audiences worldwide; a remit that requires compliance with geographic licensing rights for its streaming on demand service. By deploying real-time IP geolocation data, the Beeb can permit access to its content in licensed areas and restrict access where it is prohibited.

Digital Element also supplies its technology to the UK's Channel 5, Aertv, Videology, YouView, Disney, CNN, ESPN, Sony, CBS Interactive, ABC and Tesco's Blinkbox.

"It is imperative that the BBC ensures compliance with licensing agreements," says Matthew Wood, Head of Software Engineering for BBC Future Media, Online Technology Group. "By using accurate IP geolocation technology, we are able to ensure we abide by geographic licensing rights agreements."

Charlie Johnson, Vice President, UK and Ireland, Digital Element, said: "We are pleased to be able assist the BBC in maintaining digital rights compliance for its online content. Deploying granular and highly accurate IP geolocation data ensures licensing requirements can be confidently met."
