Rushes post trio of Ribena commercials

News Image
Rushes have completed the postproduction work on a trio of new commercials for Ribena.
In the first, 'Mummy's Boy', we see a hard-looking middle-aged man menacingly gesticulating at the camera. He is standing in a bedroom, which is decorated in classic seventies style, as he tells us what it is that hacks him off. In this case, his rantings about mums telling him how to drink, "sipping it politely" and "don't gulp your drink" are interspersed with pictures of perfect mothers, who in turn expect perfect manners from their sons. All he wants to do is "get it down my neck". The man points out that the new bottles of Ribena aren't for little squirts and dramatically flips the lid off the new bottle and tips his head back as he gulps down the drink. However, far from being the geezer that we believed him to be, Kevin is still living at home with his mum and as she stands at the bottom of the stairs in her fluffy slippers and commands her son to jump into bed he does just that.
In the second, 'Bouncer' once again features Kevin, who is in a similarly confrontational mood. This time standing still hacks him off, so he is furiously bouncing up and down on his bed, aware that his mother won't be too pleased with him. Shots of Kevin are interspersed with a cut out of a tin man and dog, both of which are completely stationary. Again, he flips the lid of his new Ribena bottle and throws his head back as the purple liquid gushes into his mouth. At that moment his mother shouts from the bottom of the stairs and Kevin starts to behave himself.
Kevin's third bugbear is lids and in this case his bluster is directed at all shapes and sizes of the offending article. His mother won't stand for too much of his messing around and once again shouts up the stairs, demanding that he tidy his bedroom. His room is soon immaculate. For all his bravado, Kevin does exactly what his mother asks him to.
The tag line in each of the three commercials is 'Are you a Ribena pulla squeeza geeza?'
Paul Wratten of Rushes explained "During the prep work we made up some footage to be played back onto a monitor. It was then shot on film so that it was possible to film the lines of the TV. I provided the piece in three different sizes, which enabled us to zoom in and emphasise both the lines and distortion. These shots were subsequently dropped into the cut."
In addition Wratten spent some time on a number of shots to ensure that they looked convincingly like old footage by using effects such as a flickering vignette with suitable weave, old film scratches and film grain. He also combined two passes of the dog and tin man, shrunk the picture and created a border out of torn paper which was shot under the caption camera.
