RTÉ Digital Learning Partnership launched

The Irish Minister for Education and Science, Dr. Michael Woods, TD and Bob Collins, Director-General of RTÉ, have announced that the Department of Education and Science and RTE have established a Digital Learning partnership.
Work will begin immediately to identify the best use of digital media, including new digital TV technologies, in the context of learning and teaching. The educational potential of digital media is beginning to be exploited worldwide resulting in the production of new learning content, interactive resources for teaching and "anytime" access to learning opportunities.
The Minister stated: "This partnership between RTÉ and the Department of Education and Science is a very significant and exciting development. It adds a totally new dimension to the government's ongoing support for the use of information and Communication technologies in education and it will facilitate the introduction of new approaches and greater access to education and lifelong learning".
In conjunction with RTE the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) will design and implement this project on behalf of the Department of Education and Science and will collaborate with the NCCA and other key partners. The project will integrate with existing ICT initiatives such as ScoilNet and other online resources.
Welcoming the establishment of the partnership RTE's Director General, Bob Collins, said: " This pilot project will highlight the potential of television as an educational medium, addressing some of the needs of our changing society and showing that education and entertainment are not mutually exclusive."
