BBC WiScape’s DRC set for top coverage
The BBC’s WiScape Digital Radio Camera (DRC), which has revolutionised BBC Outside Broadcasts’ sports coverage over the past year, is now commercially available.
The WiScape DRC is a roving, wireless system that transmits robust, high-quality digital pictures, and has a fast set-up time, reducing the number of operators needed to control the system.
Its ability to be racked remotely, allowing the picture on all cameras to be matched, coupled with the stability of its picture output, makes the DRC perfect for use in multi-camera environments.
In only requiring access to one unmanned receiver, the DRC has delivered unparalleled, in-depth coverage of sporting events to BBC viewers around the world.
At this year’s Six Nations Rugby Cup, a total of four of the cable-free, hand held high-quality digital radio cameras were used at each England match that took place at Twickenham - capturing footage that previously would not have been possible from both a set up and safety point of view.
The flexibility and ease of movement provided by the cameras enabled the production team to quickly deploy them around various parts of the ground to relay pitch side interviews, line outs, penalties and scrums, all nail-bitingly close to the touchline.
Alan Wright, Engineering Manager for BBC Outside Broadcasts commented: “WiScape’s Digital Radio Camera really did produce excellent coverage at Twickenham.
“At a recent event where the analogue cameras were being used the production team remarked how they’d been spoiled by the “clarity and sharpness” of the DRCs”.
Robin Shephard, General Manager for WiScape, a business unit of BBC Vecta said: “These cameras are revolutionising the broadcasting of sports events and are giving the viewers at home access to more exciting shots of their favourite sports.
“WiScape now enables broadcasters worldwide to have access to award winning wireless products, like the DRC.”
