Straight 8 show unseen shorts at Cannes 2003
London-based Super 8 filmmaking organisation Straight 8 are to premier 20 new short films on May 21 at the 2003 Cannes film festival.
The three-minute films are all made on a single cartridge of super 8 film, shot in sequence without editing. The show will be the first time anyone has seen these films including their makers. The films were made according to the brutally strict rules of Straight 8: the cartridge containing the film must be handed in undeveloped, with an original three minute soundtrack burnt onto CD.
The rules make for an even playing field. Top music video and commercials directors, as well as runners and writers have risen to the challenge and risked glory or abject humiliation in front of a discerning film industry crowd.
Set up in 1999 and run by Godman commercials directors Ed Sayers and Ben Gregor, Straight 8 have run numerous events in London, Germany and Paris. They also run a film course for London's prestigious ad and design body, the D&AD.
