Virgin Media And FilmFlex Roll Out Next Generation video On Demand
FilmFlex, a movies-on-demand service provider, and Virgin Media announced a new partnership to drive the development of the state-of-the-art technology which powers Virgin Movies.
Virgin Movies offers over 500 films, including hundreds of the latest releases, all ready to watch instantly on Virgin TV. The service is also available to everyone in the UK to stream online or to download to watch offline later. Most titles are available on the same day as the DVD launch, with some even coinciding with the first day of cinematic release.
Under the multi-year agreement, FilmFlex will invest in the development, roll-out and management of next generation video-on-demand services as well as procuring and curating film content for Virgin Movies.
Initial product developments planned in 2013 include the introduction of multi-device playback through Virgin TV Anywhere, Virgin Media’s cloud-based entertainment service, to give viewers’ greater freedom to watch film content. FilmFlex and Virgin Media also plan to work together on the further development of the movies-on-demand service offered on Virgin Media TiVo®, the UK’s first and fastest growing next generation pay TV platform.
The partnership between Virgin Media and FilmFlex will enable Virgin Media to extend its position as the pioneer of video-on-demand in the UK through continued innovation at a time of increasing consumer on-demand use and multi-screen living. For FilmFlex the deal reinforces its position as a major video-on-demand provider and a leading supplier of white-label services.
"This milestone partnership with Virgin Media will see the creation and development of brilliant new applications to evolve Virgin Movies over the coming years," said Jeff Henry, Chief Executive Officer at FilmFlex Movies. "There has never been such an exciting time for the video-on-demand business and we are delighted to be extending our relationship with Virgin Media with whom we have had a long and successful collaboration," Henry added.
Aleks Habdank, Director of Digital Entertainment Product at Virgin Media said: "As the home to the greatest choice of films on TV, Virgin Media is always looking to develop new ways to bring our customers the very best, most recent content whenever they want and wherever they are. FilmFlex, as experts in movies-on-demand, are key strategic partners for us as the growth of digital entertainment continues apace and we look forward to the next exciting chapter of working together."
For the Virgin TV service, FilmFlex manages Virgin Movies content licensing and management and, for the online service, FilmFlex handles platform and website operation, content management, billing and customer service.
FilmFlex, which offers more new releases to rent online than anyone else including iTunes, Lovefilm, Blinkbox and Netflix, recently eclipsed over 80 million movie buys and has processed over 5,000 films to date. The movies-on-demand company has long standing movie content supply deals with over 30 distributors, including the six major Hollywood studios, the UK’s leading independent distributors and a wealth of specialist distributors.
