Matthew Tushingham, Senior Broadcast Engineer, MediaCity Studios, has been awarded the RTS Young Technologist Award.
The Royal Television Society (RTS), Britain’s leading forum for television and related media, has announced the winner of the annual award, which is presented in memory of A.M. Beresford-Cooke.
Matthew, a Senior Broadcast Engineer, MediaCity Studios, was chosen to receive the award by a panel of judges chaired by Terry Marsh, Consultant at Strategy in Digital Media. Matthew is a graduate from Salford University with a BEng Video & Audio Engineering.
Terry Marsh, Chair of the RTS Young Technologist Award jury, said: "The RTS Young Technologist of the Year recognises the best talent in the UK technology industry, and Matthew Tushingham is a shining example of this. We were particularly impressed by his passion and commitment to the team, liaising effortlessly between broadcast engineering, digital production workflows and producers. His diverse experience, from working on the live Coronation Street broadcast to taking the lead on a major new project for CBeebies & CBBC, was inspiring and we are delighted to award Matthew this title."
Matthew Tushingham, Senior Support Engineer added: "Being nominated for the RTS Young Technologist Award 2012 was a big achievement in itself, but to have won means so much to me. It is a recognition of the achievements I have made throughout my career, and in particular the last year at The Studios, MediaCityUK, where I have learnt a lot and had the chance to be part of an incredibly forward-facing team. Having never been to IBC before, I'm looking forward to learning more about new technologies and how they can become part of our infrastructure."
Matthew’s manager, John O’Shaughnessy, Head of Technology Operations at MediaCity Studios Limited, added: "Matthew continually demonstrates his ability to work to extreme time, technological, cultural, and operational constraints and fully deserves to be recognised for this award by the RTS."
The purpose of the award is to advance education in the science, practice, technology and art of television and its allied fields, giving the winner the opportunity to attend the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC) in September. Judges look for applicants to demonstrate how the award would enhance their understanding of technology’s role in television and related fields, and how the applicants propose to share their understanding.
The judging panel included John Ive, Director of Business Development & Technology, IABM; Anil Kumar, Director, Education and Research, EngineeringUK and Oliver Gardiner, Head of Enterprise Architecture, BBC.
A.M. Beresford-Cooke, in whose memory the award is presented, was a distinguished engineer who made a substantial contribution to British broadcasting technology, helping to pioneer VHF and UHF transmission.
