VET Training: Educating Sound And Picture Professionals

News Image
Back in the day, when television was The New Media, people may well have shunned it for old technology, like an analogue book, that was more familiar and comforting. Not in our business!
And especially not at VET Training and Post Production where the team works with digital media and production technology everyday - and is not afraid to tell everyone about it. VET Training really does ‘do it’ and really can share it with everyone.
The trainers at VET are practitioners – editors, technology producers, sound engineers, people who work with production technology for image and audio everyday. Like Groucho Marx, they find television educational. Unlike Groucho they don’t shun it, but follow television production as it continually unfolds - from analogue to digital and now to HD and 3D. Telling stories through moving image and sound is just as compelling as it ever was.
The courses on offer at VET in Hoxton Square, Shoreditch, cover everything the professional requires - from managing tapeless workflows, data wrangling, shooting for successful edit, understanding current formats in digital media and file encoding, to editing with the most current software packages (Avid, Apple, Adobe Premiere).
VET specialises in the design of bespoke courses for programme makers, technicians and production teams and this has taken the VET training team to Doha, Cardiff, Islamabad, Biggin Hill and Leeds.
Being genuine technophiles, who love technology, they know lots about how it all works. The small post facility based in Hoxton Square houses a pool of creative editors and production technologists who love the challenge of digital media in all its forms. And what’s more, they are happy to teach others everything they know in especially designed VET Training courses and through certified training from Avid and Apple.
VET Trainers make courses for people who are really using the software to make programmes and films. The VET Short Courses are designed from experience of what really needs to be understood in the workplace everyday.
Director of Training Joan Leese, when asked about recent trends, noted an increase in the number of Independent production companies who are planning to do their post in-house. ‘The Indies are constantly changing the way they work – some bringing more in - house, some taking more out of house. We help people set up whatever level of production technology & workflow suits them, and train the staff to manage it themselves.’
VET understand that some professional editors are switching from editing in FCP to Avid Media Composer and, although principles of editing remain the same, the tools are different. So investing a bit of time into learning is very important.
Joan reports: "When one of the Indies crossed over from FCP to Avid we ran a weekend course for them so they could keep their work flowing."
An Indie staff member commented: "…my knowledge of Avid and its technical aspects has improved vastly since doing this course and has put me in good stead for our switch over from Final Cut Pro. Being able to get hands on with Avid and being given sound advice and tips from people who are extremely knowledgeable in this software has been invaluable."
When asked what is special about the VET Team, Joan said: "We hear from our clients that we can make the technical things aspects of production understandable. We’re all genuinely interested and committed to sharing our hard earned knowledge with colleagues and friends, old and new."
