IFTA Announces Nominees For The 9th Annual Awards
With the ninth annual Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) just around the corner it has been revealed that Albert Nobbs, The Guard and Stella Days have each picked up nine nominations in the shortlist.
All three films will contest for Best Film, along with Terry McMahon’s psychological thriller Charlie Casanova, with the same four films competing for Best Script.
Meanwhile directors for The Guard and Charlie Casanova, John Michael McDonagh and Terry McMahon have been nominated for best director alongside Rebecca Daly for The Other Side Of Sleep and Thaddeus O’Sullivan for Stella Days.
Brendan Gleeson and Ciarán Hinds have received two nominations apiece. Gleeson is up for Best Actor for The Guard and Best Supporting Actor for Albert Nobbs, while Hinds is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and in the Best Supporting Actor category for The Debt.
Rounding off the Best Actor category is Michael Fassbender (Shame) and Martin Sheen (Stella Days), with Gleeson’s The Guard co-star Liam Cunningham and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) also up for Best Supporting Actor.
Reflecting the Irish film and television industry’s continuing development of its creative, original and entertaining output year-on-year, IFTA received 337 titles submitted for consideration in the 2012 Awards.
Academy CEO, Aine Moriarty said: "The Irish Film & Television Awards is Ireland’s showcase to the world of what our small but outstanding film and television community has to offer: excellent and challenging feature films and dramas; entertaining television and engaging factual content. The Irish industry consistently delivers world-class standards of work that is watched by a global audience. Ireland’s economic struggles have been well documented, but against this pressure it’s heartening to see how Ireland’s hard-working creative community continues to punch above its weight and really deliver."
The 9th Annual Irish Film and Television Awards will take place on Saturday 11th February 2012 at the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD).
