'Taxing Matters' Tackled By Union

About 200 film and TV freelances packed into Friends House in central London to hear from a tax specialist and accountants on how to respond to a major tax investigation.
Last week's meeting followed news that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is investigating a firm of accountants, Christopher Lunn & Co., which has many freelance clients working in media and entertainment.
As a result, these freelances have been written to by HMRC about their tax returns and the meeting was to provide information and assistance on how to respond to these letters.
Supported by union, BECTU, speakers, such as Mike Truman, Editor of Taxation magazine, gave an excellent presentation and overview, and questions were fielded by accountants Steven Sykes, Keith Hall and Martin Anderton.
The meeting was organised by BECTU in collaboration with the TVWatercooler website. TVWatercooler continues to provide an online forum for freelances affected by the investigation with support from Mike Truman and members of last night's panel.
