Nexus Directors Get Webby Awards Nomination
Nexus interactive directing duo Champagne Valentine's microsite for Tate Modern's The Unilever Series: Miroslaw Balka ‘How It Is’ installation has been nominated for a Webby.
Hailed as the "Internet's highest honour" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honouring excellence on the Internet, including websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, and mobile web sites.
The nomination falls within the Art category as part of this year's 14th Annual Awards. Champagne Valentine’s Placebo 'The Never-Ending Why' interactive music video has also been selected as an Official Honoree in the Music category, as has Sour’s 'Hibi No Neiro' music video directed by recent Nexus signing Who-Fu.
Working in close collaboration with Tate Online and Miroslaw Balka, Champagne Valentine designed the site to allow online visitors to experience the concerns of the work via a unique 3D interface. By exploring a series of dark and abstract spaces, mirroring the vast black void Balka constructed in the Turbine Hall, the visitor encountered visions and sounds inspired by notes made by the artist, with these notes themselves suspended in the darkness. Also scattered around the site were cleverly integrated films of Balka explaining and describing the work and its inspiration.
As one of only five nominees in the Art category, Champagne Valentine's work and the Tate team behind the project are eligible for the internet industry's two most sought-after awards: The Webby Award and The Webby People's Voice Award. Whilst the Academy selects The Webby Awards winners, the online public selects The People's Voice Award winners with voting ending on 29th April.
Winners will be announced on 4th May and honoured at a star-studded ceremony in New York on 14th June where they will have an opportunity to deliver one of The Webby Awards’ famous five-word speeches.
