Aardman design BBC Three's blob idents

The recent launch of BBC Three saw branding consultancy Lambie-Nairn tasked with creating a unique identity for the channel.
They wanted a use a character in the idents, so that it could act as an intermediary between the audience and the BBC, and Aardman Animations Stefan Marjoram came up with the answer - strange but wonderful characters called ‘blobs.’
The blobs were originally created as a lip-synch test. Marjoram wanted to try animating some dialogue with the same attention to detail as is present in Aardman's traditional work. Stefan tried to create the simplest character possible - so that he could focus attention on the mouth and eyes.
The blobs matched all of Lambie-Nairn’s criteria for the BBC Three identity so Aardman were then commissioned to develop them for the idents.
They exhibit a wide range of character traits, from tough and likeable to impulsive, sweet and mischievous.
The new identity includes idents, stings, an on-screen presentation system, internal communication tools, stationery and literature.
