Blakeway Tells A Tale Of Two Britains For BBC Four

Blakeway Productions, a Ten Alps company, has produced A Tale of Two Britains for BBC Four, a documentary offering an alternative view of life in 1930s Britain.
A Tale of Two Britains will challenge the conventional view that 1930s Britain was a time of depression and austerity, by revealing evidence that it was in fact a period of transformation. A boom in housing revolutionised the lives of millions of slum dwellers and consumption increased as new gadgets came on the market. Using recent historical research and interviews with university historians, A Tale of two Britains aims to surprise viewers with its charming view of post-World War One Britain.
Denys Blakeway, Executive Producer and CEO, Blakeway Productions, said: "A Tale of Two Britains will both surprise and cheer viewers who have lived under the shadow of the bleak 1930s for too long. While most of the world suffered from the depression that followed the market crash of 1929, the UK was able to shrug off the worst effects thanks to prudent management of the economy by the National Government. For the majority it was a time of rising prosperity and for the first time the working classes could afford to take holidays, go to the cinema and eat out at restaurants."
A Tale of Two Britains was produced and and directed by Alex Leith. It was commissioned and executive produced by Mark Bell for BBC4 and executive produced by Denys Blakeway for Blakeway Productions. It is due to air on October 21 at 9pm on BBC4.
